The Aim
To focus on and develop personal skills and
theoretical understanding in counselling and support
work with people with learning and/or physical
disabilities.
Who would benefit from this course
These could include: offers counsellors,
psychotherapists, social workers, care workers,
nurses, teachers and other professionals.
The Course Aims

To improve the
understanding and skills we offer Clients who
have learning and/ or physical disabilities, by
developing knowledge about and sensitivity
towards our own, and other peoples fears,
expectations, beliefs and attitudes.

To recognise the
strengths and needs of people who have
disabilities.

To raise awareness of
the effects of a lifetime of learning and/ or
physical disabilities on the person and all
their relationships.

To consider the effects
of different disabilities upon the client and
their families.

To foster a critical and
evaluative approach to the theories and concepts
which deal with this client group, such as:
impact of the disability on the client/family,
primary and secondary handicap, lack of, or
excessive expectations of performance.

Review relevant cultural
and historical issues and context.

Consider a variety of
approaches to helping the person with learning
and/ or physical disabilities to express their
needs and feelings, and thereby enhance their
own lives.
Course Details
The course comprises a set of three modules
including an individual 3,000 word assignment (or
negotiated alternative) for each module. Students
are encouraged to use the assignments to deepen
their empathic understanding of their clients. The
modules provide a theoretical framework for the
practitioner to develop their understanding of
people with special needs and to explore
applications that develop their practice in the
workplace. The modules are:
Module One: Communication Skills
Module Two: Assessing the where the client is in
the healing process
Module Three: Models and Aspects of the Healing
process
Duration: The course takes place over one
academic year comprising 7 non residential two day
study blocks. Overnight accommodation can be booked
at the centre.
Cost: £1350 includes all meals, all
refreshments, materials and handouts.
Award: Diploma accredited by Middlesex
University following completion of all modules and
three 3,000 word assignments or negotiated
alternatives.
Dates: 7 two day study blocks on Thursday and
Fridays.
